The African Fact-Checking Alliance (AFCA) It is a network of newsrooms and organisations that collaborate on fact-checking initiatives across Africa. The alliance is involved in various activities, including training and mentoring, transnational collaborative projects, and building shared resources and infrastructure to combat misinformation and uphold information integrity

AFCA's activities include offering stipend-based fellowships to journalists and fact-checkers, providing intensive editorial training and mentoring, and supporting the production of fact-checking articles to counter mis/disinformation. The alliance also coordinates with partners to establish and train fact-checking desks, referred to as CheckDesks, which are equipped with scalable workflow and production systems, staffed by skilled researchers and editors, and supported by diversified revenue models for sustainability 

The alliance was initially established under a partnership with UNESCO and is currently spearheaded by Code for Africa's PesaCheck team. AFCA membership is institutional, meaning that its members are newsrooms or organisations rather than individuals. The alliance has been involved in various initiatives, including a Meta-funded pilot in Mali to support a CheckDesk and a series of seed-grants to newsrooms in Mali to establish or expand their fact-checking capabilities 

AFCA's work is crucial in countering mis/disinformation and hate speech, especially in countries where local resources for gathering information may be limited. The alliance provides a mechanism for quick and efficient responses to misinformation through its network and database. Additionally, AFCA is part of Code for Africa's larger network, which includes other initiatives like the WanaData community of women data scientists and storytellers, the africanDRONE network of civic drone operators, and the iLAB forensic analysis unit.

The African Wikipedian Alliance (AWA) is a network of African-focused Wikipedians-in-Residence (WiR) whose aim is to strengthen Wikipedia editor communities and expand African content on the platform. It is underwritten by Code for Africa (CfA) to support African Wikipedians in improving the quantity and quality of African content on global Wiki platforms, as well as to boost gender equity/justice on these platforms and detect and debunk disinformation or content vandalism targeting African audiences.

The AWA is part of CfA's broader commitment to building indigenous communities-of-practice and support networks across the continent. It is one of several communities under CfA's stewardship, such as africanDRONE, WanaData, Hacks/Hackers, and AFCA.

Empowering citizens through drone technology

Charter.africa is an initiative led by a consortium of six organisations that use civic tech to boost citizen engagement with the African Union’s Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance (ACDEG). The project aims to strengthen participatory democratic governance systems in African Union member states through the African Governance Architecture (AGA). It involves empowering civic initiatives in eleven target countries to use civic technologies and data-driven solutions to amplify citizen voices at the continental level, promote democratic governance, and support civic engagement with the AGA and the African Union (AU)

The Charter Project Africa is a multi-stakeholder initiative involving organisations such as the European Partnership for Democracy (lead), Africtivistes, Code for Africa, Democracy Works Foundation (DWF), Goree Institute, and ECDPM. The project focuses on using digital democracy technologies and includes activities such as training citizen watchdogs to use open source tools, organising story sprints, and providing fellowships to support grantee organisations with external expertise 

The focal countries for the project are Botswana, Benin, Cabo Verde, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia. The Charter Project Africa has been supporting national and continental civil society-led efforts to promote ACDEG through the development and use of civic tech tools, with a focus on youth and women participation in initiatives.

The institutional web and mobile platform, known as the Virtual Evidence Platform, documenting initiatives and activities of the consortium was developed by Code for Africa (CfA), which launched in two phases concluding in August 2023. The VEP is a repository of open data about ACDEG indicators and related demographic and political economy contextual data, along with a catalogue of reusable open source software solutions for digital democracy activities.
