Outbreak
Improving health decisions with data, insights, and tools.
Outbreak.AFRICA seeks to improve data-driven decision making by providing a set of interactive tools and data journalism that provides actionable insights into epidemiological factors, healthcare system factors, demographic vulnerability and access to WASH and basic services.
Outbreak.africa is a data and community project initiated by Code for Africa (CfA) to combat the Covid-19 infodemic in Africa. The project focuses on harnessing data to empower decision-makers, journalists, and the public with accurate information to address the challenges posed by the pandemic and misinformation. The key components of Outbreak.africa include: 1. Data research and visualisation: The project sources, cleans, analyses, and visualises datasets to aid in the effective distribution of vaccines and to inform the public about the pandemic. This includes the development of tools like the African Covid-19 Vulnerability Index (ACVI) to identify vulnerable populations and guide vaccine distribution efforts. 2. Data journalism fellowships: Outbreak.africa has awarded WanaData fellowships to journalists in countries such as Senegal, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Kenya. These fellowships have resulted in the publication of data-driven stories on national media platforms, enhancing public understanding and countering misinformation. 3. Debunking misinformation: In collaboration with CfA’s fact-checking initiative, PesaCheck, Outbreak.africa has published fact-checks to counter false narratives about Covid-19, thus ensuring access to verified information. 4. Wikipedian in Residence (WiR): The project has appointed WiR fellows who are responsible for updating Covid-19 related content on Wikipedia and Wikidata, contributing to the availability of accurate information and countering misinformation specific to Africa. 5. Rolodex of scientific experts: A comprehensive database of African Covid-19 experts has been compiled, including medical doctors, scientists, epidemiologists, academics, and researchers. This resource enables journalists and researchers to connect with experts for accurate scientific knowledge. 6. Open data portal: All stories, data, and resources generated through the project are made available on the Outbreak Africa open data portal, serving as a centralised hub for valuable information accessible to various stakeholders. Outbreak.africa has been recognised for its impact and was listed among the top 10 Covid-19 data journalism projects in 2020 by DataJournalism.com
