HURUmap
Discover the stories behind the data
HURUmap helps storytellers and campaigners use data to add context and depth to stories.
HURUmap is a data visualisation platform that provides journalists, activists, and civic organisations with a toolkit for finding and embedding interactive data visualisations into their storytelling. It leverages technology to make census and other demographic data more accessible and understandable, helping to put evidence-based data into stories and give a human face to numbers provided by government sources. HURUmap's underlying data is quality-checked and comes from reputable official sources, including government census data, PEPFAR, and Uwezo. The platform is built on Wazimap, an open-source platform by OpenUp and Media Monitoring Africa, designed to make census data more understandable The platform is used in newsrooms across several countries and incorporates detailed census/demographic data to "put the people into the numbers". It allows for the comparison of data across different geographical locations, adding depth to journalistic stories. HURUmap has been customised from Wazimap and includes additional features like grouped column charts, which allow for more complex data comparisons The data is open source and available on the HURUmap GitHub page HURUmap has been involved in various investigative projects across Africa, such as the award-winning "Architecture of Apartheid" and Code for Africa’s Dominion investigation. It has also been used to track trends in crime rates in urban areas like Nairobi.
